Doctor of Chiropractic

Chiropractors undergo a rigorous, 5 academic year education after completing a 4 year bachelor’s degree. In some areas such as anatomy, physiology, rehab, nutrition, radiology, neurology & orthopedics, they receive as much, if not more, intensive education than medical students. They must complete a minimum one-year clinical-based program/residency with patient care. The curriculum is 4,200+ hours of classroom, laboratory & clinical experience. A four-part written board exam, practical exam & jurisprudence exam is required for licensure. Chiropractic is a health care profession which utilizes a manual or physical rehab approach to health care that focuses on disorders of the nervous system, musculoskeletal system, extremities and the effects these disorders have on general health. Doctors of Chiropractic (D.C.) have broad diagnostic skills, trained to provide therapeutic physiotherapy, prescribe rehabilitative exercises, provide nutritional and ergonomic consultation.

Qualified Medical Evaluator

A Qualified Medical Evaluator (QME) in California is a physician certified by the California Division of Workers’ Compensation to provide independent medical-legal evaluations in workers’ compensation cases. QMEs assess injured workers to determine issues such as causation (whether an injury is work-related), permanent disability, apportionment and the need for future medical care. These evaluations are neutral and used to help resolve disputes between injured workers, employers & insurers.

To become certified, physicians must hold an active California license, complete specialized training in medical-legal evaluation/report writing and pass a rigorous state examination administered by the DWC Medical Unit. QMEs are also required to complete continuing education and follow strict reporting and legal standards to ensure their opinions meet the level of substantial medical evidence. Their role is not to treat patients, but to provide clear, objective and defensible medical opinions within the legal framework of California workers’ compensation.
